ABOUT ASHLEIGH MORRIS

I am a Melbourne-based barrister with more than five years’ experience at the Bar, practising primarily in family law, with a particular emphasis on trial advocacy. The majority of my appearances are in contested hearings and trials, where I bring well-established courtroom skills and expertise, careful preparation, and clear strategic judgment.
I specialise in complex property and parenting disputes, and I am regularly briefed in matters that require rigorous cross-examination, detailed evidence management, and decisive advocacy in the trial setting. I am also regularly briefed for counsel’s opinion in matters requiring clear strategic and pragmatic advice. I am frequently recommended in cases involving complex client dynamics, where my ability to manage expectations and communicate persuasively assists in keeping matters on track and advancing outcomes effectively, always with a focus on achieving the best possible result for the client.
In addition to my family law practice, I appear in criminal prosecutions and maintain a substantial Children’s Court practice, acting in both government and legally aided matters. This breadth of trial experience across multiple jurisdictions informs the depth and versatility of my advocacy in family law litigation.
While based in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs, I am frequently briefed to appear across metropolitan and regional courts. Alongside courtroom advocacy, I accept briefs for written advice and drafting, and I work closely with instructing solicitors to manage urgent deadlines, refine strategy, and workshop complex issues. I value the solicitor–barrister relationship and welcome opportunities to provide support both inside and outside the courtroom.
I am regularly briefed on behalf of Independent Children’s Lawyers in both family law and child protection matters, and I remain open to legally aided briefs where appropriate.
Before joining the Bar, I practised as a solicitor in both criminal and family law, appearing at all levels of state and federal courts and tribunals. My pre-Bar experience also includes working with Victoria Police Prosecutions, serving as a Judge’s Associate in the Criminal Division of the County Court of Victoria, and lecturing in Criminal Law at Swinburne University of Technology.
Prior to coming to the Bar, I was admitted to practice in October 2017, having completed a Juris Doctor at the University of Melbourne. During my studies, I was awarded the Eleanor and Joseph Wertheim Scholarship and the Graduate Access Melbourne Bursary, and was granted a highly coveted Commonwealth Supported Place offered only to a limited number of top-ranked candidates in the first round of offers.
I also hold a Bachelor of Arts (Criminal Justice) from Monash University, where I graduated with first-class honours, was named Dux Litterarum of the degree, and received multiple academic distinctions including the Dean’s Recognition Award for Academic Excellence and the GEO Group Australia Award for Academic Excellence.
I completed my Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice at the Australian National University in 2017 and am admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Victoria and the High Court of Australia. I passed the Victorian Bar Entrance Examination on my first and only attempt in October 2019, completed the Bar Readers’ Course in March 2020, and was called to the Bar in May 2020.
My professional development has included participation in the LIV Judicial Mentorship Program (as Coordinator in 2017), completion of the LIV Trust Accounting Course (2017), and the OPP Trial Development Program (2022). I am also a member of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) External Junior Counsel Panel.
Outside practice, I am a long-term foster carer with The Lost Dogs Home, frequently caring for litters of puppies and kittens until they find permanent homes. I am also an active advocate for children with dyslexia, working to improve educational standards and outcomes for students with learning differences.
