Why the Solicitor-Barrister Relationship is Central to Legal Practice


For me, one of the most valuable parts of being at the Bar is the relationships I build with solicitors. While every brief is important, I see my role as more than just appearing in court on a given day. Strong solicitor-barrister relationships make the work more effective, more enjoyable, and ultimately better for our clients. Here’s how I go about strengthening those relationships and why they matter so much to me.


Communication Matters

I make it a priority to be available for a phone call - whether it’s to talk through strategy, sense-check an idea, or provide a quick second opinion when time is short. For me, good communication isn’t limited to the moments leading up to a hearing; it’s about being a sounding board throughout the process. I find that when solicitors know they can call and we can quickly workshop an issue together, it builds trust and makes collaboration smoother the next time around.


A Mutually Beneficial Partnership

The solicitor-barrister relationship is at its best when it’s a true partnership. I know solicitors value being able to ring me to brainstorm or to ask the “random” questions that crop up in novel situations - the ones where clarity is needed quickly and practically. In turn, I rely on solicitors’ insights into their clients, the detail they bring to a matter, and the practical realities of managing the file. When we work closely together, both sides benefit, and the client receives advice and advocacy that is clear, efficient, and strategic.


Consistency Builds Confidence

One of the ways I try to strengthen relationships is through consistency: showing up prepared, advocating clearly, and providing the same level of support and reliability each time. Solicitors should feel confident that when they brief me, they know what they’re going to get. That consistency, I find, is what turns a one-off brief into an ongoing professional relationship.


Relationships Matter in a Stressful Profession

Our profession is high pressure. We deal with complex legal issues, distressed clients, and an adversarial system that can take its toll. That’s why I think it’s so important to have strong professional relationships with peers who understand. Good solicitor-barrister relationships mean we’re not tackling that pressure in isolation. Having colleagues you can trust - who you know will pick up the phone, who you can be candid with about the realities of a case - makes the work not only more manageable but also more rewarding.


Final Thoughts

For me, lasting solicitor–barrister relationships are built on communication, consistency, and mutual trust. They make the work better, the outcomes stronger, and the profession a more supportive place to be. It’s a privilege to be part of those partnerships, and I see every brief as an opportunity not just to advocate, but to strengthen the professional relationships that sustain us in this demanding but rewarding field.
